Haakon County Public Library, along with Midland Community Library, are the central facilities for the library system that serves Haakon County, SD.

The library serves a population of 2200 residents.  The current library has 600 square feet of space and over 10,000 volumes.

The library is open 30 hours per week.

Summer Hours:
Monday - Friday          11:30 AM to 5:30 PM

Winter Hours:
Monday - Friday          11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

The library remains open during the lunch hour and is closed for national holidays.

Library Board meets at 5:00 PM on the second Wednesday of every month in the community room of the Haakon County Courthouse.

Friends of the Library Meetings are on the third Thursday of every month at 6:00 PM in the community room of the Haakon County Courthouse.

All meetings are open to the public.

Who Are the Friends?
Friends of the Library is a non-profit organization comprised of community members like you with varied interests and a shared passion:  They value, support, and champion the public library.  Active membership is open to individuals who want involvement in promoting the materials, services and programs of the library.

Financial Sponsorship is for those interested in providing financial support only.  Friends of the Library devote time and energy to:

  • Encouraging community awareness by sharing your passion for books, learning and the library in our community
  • Raising funds to purchase equipment and materials not available through the regular budget
  • Providing volunteer assistance for library programs, open houses, special events and public service projects
  • Sponsoring special programs for children and adults
  • Advocating for strong library support
